Local Veterans of Foreign Wars posts and their ladies auxiliaries are sponsoring state and national scholarship competitions for students in Washington and Greene counties.

In the “Voice of Democracy” contest, students in grades nine through 12 compete by writing and recording an essay on the theme, “Why Veterans Are Important to Our Nation’s History and Future.”

The “Patriot’s Pen” contest is open to any sixth- through eighth-grade students. This year’s theme is “Why I Appreciate America’s Veterans,” in an essay of 300 to 400 words. Entries for either contest must be submitted by Nov. 1.

The competition is open to those who attend public, private or parochial schools. Those who are home-schooled also can apply.

Anyone with questions can call Roberta Garn at 724-926-9361.
