WARREN, Ohio (AP) – A Vietnam veteran from Texas who moved to Ohio this year has received a Bronze Star and other overdue medals for his military service.

Thomas Ducharme was presented with the 10 medals this week at his restaurant in Warren, about 50 miles southeast of Cleveland.

Ohio’s Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown helped present the awards. Brown said it’s important to remember military service, especially for people who weren’t honored as they should have been when they returned home.

Ducharme said he learned he’d been awarded the medals decades ago, but a number of factors apparently kept him from actually getting them, including a fire at a facility that kept military records.

He said it’s a privilege to be honored now for his service 45 years ago.
