Ohio officer charged after K-9’s death

MEDINA, Ohio (AP) – A northeast Ohio police officer has been charged with animal cruelty after a police dog died from heatstroke in his cruiser.
Sgt. Brett Harrison of the Montville Township Police Department near Medina was charged with two misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty Friday.
Police said the two-year-old German shepherd, Beny, died Sept. 28 after Harrison left him in a cruiser in the station parking lot from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cruiser was off, and the windows were closed.
Harrison previously issued a statement expressing his “deepest apology” to Montville Township and to his “partner, friend and loving family member Beny.” He received a two-week unpaid suspension and lost 40 hours of vacation in connection with the death.
No attorney is listed for him.
