A Canonsburg man accused of stealing $38,000 meant to purchase a rental property was sentenced to 364 days to two years less two days in Washington County jail.

Troy Steele, of 221 Belmont Ave., was sentenced last week before Washington County Judge John F. DiSalle. Steele was found guilty of theft by deception and theft by failure to make required disposition funds after a nonjury trial in August.

Steele was accused of using the money that was intended to buy a rental property on Allison Avenue for personal use.

DiSalle also sentenced Steele to three years of probation and ordered him to pay restitution.

Steele will begin serving his sentence on Nov. 7.
