JEFFERSON – School warning devices on Route 188 at the Jefferson-Morgan School District campus will be updated with a $6,638 grant Jefferson Township received from the state’s Automated Red Light Enforcement program.

The award is part of nearly $6.6 million in Automated Red Light Enforcement funding that will be distributed to 37 municipalities statewide to fund 41 safety projects, said an announcement released Thursday by state Sen. Tim Solobay, D-Canonsburg, and state Rep. Pam Snyder, D-Jefferson.

The ARLE program is funded by fines collected through red-light cameras that were authorized to be used in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh in 2012. The proceeds are distributed throughout the state to prevent the cameras from being implemented as a revenue enhancement tool.

“Using fines collected from hazardous drivers is a good way to pay for safety improvements,” Solobay said. “It saves lives and taxpayer dollars.”

Projects improving safety, enhancing mobility and reducing congestion were considered for funding. Municipalities submitted more than 226 applications, with only one in five being approved.

“Funding under this program is very competitive, so local officials can be proud of their work on behalf of local children and their parents,” Snyder said.
