A South Fayette Township police officer was struck by a vehicle early Tuesday while he directed traffic at the intersection affected by a major water main break.
Jason Hensel was directing traffic at 6:10 a.m. when his flashlight apparently struck the side mirror of a vehicle traveling north on Mayview Road approaching the intersection of Boyce Road, said township police.
Hensel was spun around and knocked to the ground, where he struck his head and knee on the pavement, police said. He was treated at St. Clair Hospital and released. Hensel is expected to return to work Wednesday.
Although the accident occurred in South Fayette Township, the report was taken by Upper St. Clair police.
The driver, Deborah Cox, 53, of Washington, told Upper St. Clair police she was driving at about 10 mph and attempted to travel between Hensel and his patrol car that was parked on the side of the road, said township police Chief Douglas Burkholder.
Cox stopped immediately after the accident. The chief said he does not expect charges will be filed against Cox.
Boyce Road has been closed since an early morning water main break Monday. A second break was reported early Tuesday.
South Fayette Township police said the road is not expected to reopen to traffic for a few days.
