Trial to open for man shot by police officer

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Trial opens this week for a man charged with dragging an officer with his vehicle before the officer shot and paralyzed him.
Twenty-one-year-old Leon Ford is charged in Allegheny County with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest and other counts.
County prosecutors and police contend Ford was speeding and rolled through a stop sign in November 2012 before police pulled him over. They allege that he then struggled with officers who tried to pull him out and then attempted to drive away, dragging an officer who shot him four times.
Ford has sued in federal court, saying an internal police board determined that officers contributed to the shooting by not following proper procedures, although members also said the shooting wouldn’t have occurred had Ford obeyed the officers.
