Charges against a Washington man arrested last month on a warrant for allegedly robbing another man at knifepoint were withdrawn Wednesday and was he was charged instead with theft.

Samuel M. Wheeler, 55, of 235 W. Chestnut St., had been charged with kidnapping, robbery, terroristic threats and simple assault for reportedly entering a man’s car at the intersection of Walnut and Franklin streets on Aug. 18 and stealing $190. He then reportedly had theman drive him to Henderson Avenue.

Wheeler waived the theft charge to court.

Wheeler had been scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Central Court before District Judge Ethan Ward. He had been in Washington County Jail on $10,000 bond. Ward released him on unsecured bond.
