A community planning and development representative from the the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development spent a day last month at the Washington County Redevelopment Authority and found it has “exemplary processes in place” to ensure that Community Development Block Grant funds are used in accordance with the program requirements.
Washington County received $3,301,371 through the program in 2013 which were used mostly for public services and infrastructure projects.
The HUD representative gave special scrutiny to one endeavor, a street project in California Borough, noting that the county correctly determined eligibility in an area where U.S. Census data shows that 53.5 percent of the residents have low to moderate incomes. The target area included new sidewalks, handicap-accessible ramps, lighting and landscaping in a primarily residential area.
