State police in Pittsburgh are searching for a tractor-trailer involved in a fatal accident on Interstate 79 one mile south of the Mt. Nebo in Allegheny County just after 6 a.m. Tuesday.

According to police, a Volkswagen Tiguan sport utility vehicle was traveling south when it was struck by a set of dual tires that bounced from the northbound lanes across a grass median and over guide wires.

The tires hit the front of the vehicle and traveled over the top, killing the male driver and injuring the female passenger.

The tires continued to bounce in the southbound lanes and struck the driver’s side of a Chevrolet Cobalt.

The male driver of that vehicle was treated for minor injuries at Allegheny General Hospital and released, police said. The woman in the SUV was taken to Allegheny General with head and arm injuries.
