A Washington truck driver was injured Tuesday morning when his tri-axle truck overturned on Route 18 (Henderson Avenue)in Chartiers Township just before 4 a.m. Tuesday.

Township police said Trevor Kniha, 26, was driving south in the 1200 block near Labrea Drive when a deer ran out in front of his vehicle. Kniha told police he attempted to swerve and when he hit the brakes, the truck pulled to the right. It caught the lip at the edge of the road and overturned.

The truck was loaded with dirt from gas drilling sites, which spilled into an open field. Traffic was reduced to one lane in each direction for about an hour. The road was closed for about 30 minutes while the truck was righted.

The Washington County Hazardous Materials Team and the state Department of Environmental Protection responded because of oil and diesel fuel leaking from the wreckage. Chartiers firefighters also were at the scene.

Kniha was taken to Washington Hospital for treatment of injuries to the right side of his face and right leg.

The Trinity Area and Chartiers-Houston school districts were also alerted because of the potential impact on bus routes.
