The second annual Washington County Day of Giving was on its way Wednesday to surpassing the amount of money collected during the fundraiser last year.

The Washington County Community Foundation had already raised $219,000 by 9 a.m., one hour after the campaign began, taking in more than half of what was collected Sept. 10, 2013, over 12 hours, its website indicated.

Betsie Trew, president and chief executive officer of the foundation, said earlier this week she expected a successful fundraiser Wednesday because this day of giving, unlike last year, was accepting checks from donors who are uncomfortable making donations through the Internet.

At 9 a.m. the Washington City Mission had collected more than $25,000, the highest sum then among the 104 charitable organizations that signed up to participate in the fundraiser.

The foundation had collected $339,000 by noon with eight hours left for people to make donations. Last year the event collected nearly $400,000,

The foundation was matching each donation with a percentage from a $100,000 pool of money.

A website was set up for people to follow the total sum collected Wednesday and how much of that money was earmarked to each charity.
