WAYNESBURG – Waynesburg/Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Department was called to a fire at 600 Sugar Run Road shortly after noon Monday and by 1 p.m. they were putting away their equipment.

Damage to the home was considered to be “minimal,” said fire Chief Jeff Marshall.

Marshall said the small fire is believed to have started as the result of “carelessness” when a construction worker doing roofing work on the home tossed a cigarette away. A Greene Home Improvements truck was parked in the driveway.

“We think it (a cigarette) became trapped between two portions of the roof and that is what started the fire,” Marshall said. “They (the construction company) had it out before we got there.”

Volunteer firefighters used a fan to drive smoke out of the attic area of the residence, a rental property, owned by Bruce and Barb Rohrer of Waynesburg.

The home was undergoing updates for a new tenant to move in. Mary Phillips, who lives across the street from the house, said her daughter, Jessica, moved her belongings into the home and will be relocating there soon.
