Report: Nearly 100,000 WV children live in poverty

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – A Census report says more than one in four children in West Virginia lives in poverty.
The Charleston Gazette reports that’s nearly 100,000 children in the state.
The numbers come from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2013 American Community Survey.
The report also says one in three children under the age 5 lives in poverty. In West Virginia, 27 percent of all children and 33 percent of children under 5 live in poverty. Both of those numbers are the highest they’ve been in the past five years.
Overall, nearly one in five West Virginians, or 18.5 percent, lives in poverty.
For a family of four, the poverty line in 2013 was about $23,000.
