Author presents wildflower program
Mary Joy Haywood, a former professor of botany at Carlow College and an officeholder with the Botanical Society of Western Pennsylvania, presented the program at the September meeting of the Rices Landing Town and Country Garden Club.
During her presentation, Haywood referred to the book she co-authored, “Wildflowers of Pennsylvania.” Each member had a copy of the book for reference during the presentation.
Colorful photographs of the flowers in bloom revealed each plant’s beauty in great detail. Each photograph was accompanied by a description of the plant, its botanical and common name, and the months when the plant bloomed.
There are more than 1,250 species in Pennsylvania, making this one of the richest areas in the United States in plant diversity.
Haywood, a Greene County native, having grown up on a farm in the Lippencott area, received her bachelor’s degree from Carlow College, her master of science in teaching from Southern University, La., and her doctorate from Michigan State University.
At Carlow, she also served as chairman of the division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics from 1992 -2000.
