On Sunday, St. George’s Anglican Church in Waynesburg will host the Rev. Dr. Robert Mbinda of Mbeya Tanzania.

Mbinda is the founder and patron of the Good Samaritan Orphanage in Mbeya. After an academic career including studies in Ambridge, Mbinda and his wife, Mariam, were moved to open the orphanage in response to the AIDS epidemic in East Africa in 1996.

The population of the orphanage quickly outgrew their facilities and in 2000 they purchased a parcel of land and created a school so that the children might have hope and a future. There are currently more than 200 children in the school and its dormitories, which are staffed by teachers and local volunteers. There is a waiting list of more than 80 children waiting to move to the orphanage.

The children grow much of their own food, and the community works to fund the school by growing trees and making soap. Recent projects such as drilling a water well and running electricity to the school were supported by St. George’s Church.

The church is at 100 Bonar Ave, in Waynesburg. The service starts at 10:30 Sunday morning and will be followed by a fellowship dinner. All are welcome to hear Dr. Mbinda and to stay for the dinner.
