A Monongahela man at a district judge’s office Thursday for a preliminary hearing on drug charges is in more trouble after an alleged outburst in the courtroom when he flipped over a table.

Matthew Chacko, 36, of 130 Factory St., was arrested during a sweep earlier this month by Monongahela police on charges of possession and possession with intent to deliver heroin and narcotic painkillers.

Police Chief Brian Tempest said when Chacko was brought into the courtroom of District Judge Mark Wilson on Thursday, he started yelling obscenities about the police and judge.

“He then seemed to settle down,” Tempest said. “But when he asked the judge a question, he apparently did not like the answer because he jumped up and flipped the table over.”

Officer Kevin Harris suffered cuts and abrasions to the side of his leg after being hit by the table.

Chacko, who was ordered held on the drug charges, was removed from the courtroom and taking to a holding area. He was charged Friday with retaliation against a judge and/or prosecution, aggravated assault on a police officer, simple assault and disorderly conduct. Chacko, who remains in Washington County jail on $100,000 bond, will be arraigned on the new charges at a later date.

Tempest said Chacko was one of several people picked up during the sweep scheduled for hearings Thursday. Michael Magiske, 29, of Monongahela was ordered held for court on drug-related charges while Nicholas Henderson, 30, of New Eagle, and Joshua Louttit, 22, of Monongahela, waived their cases to court.
