A man stopped his car on Route 40, stepped out of it and was struck Wednesday by a vehicle whose driver fled in South Strabane Township, authorities said.

South Strabane fire Chief Scott Reese said the victim apparently wanted to talk to someone when he stopped his car in the eastbound lane about 7:15 p.m. on Route 40 east in Pancake.

Police did not immediately know the victim’s name. The vehicle that fled was traveling behind the victim when he stopped his car in the 1800 block of Route 40, police said.

Reese said the victim was conscious after being struck by the vehicle, and he appeared to have injuries to his hand and leg.

He was flown by helicopter from a field behind nearby South Strabane Fire Station 1 to a Pittsburgh hospital. His condition was not known late Wednesday.
