Firefighters quickly extinguished a kitchen fire Saturday afternoon at a Union Township residence.

The blaze at 6065 State Route 88 was caused by cooking oil that had been left unattended on the stove, according to Elrama assistant fire chief Jonathan Madaras. One occupant, Joseph Delacruz, escaped the house without injury. He was being assisted by family.

The fire spread to the attic and caused more than $5,000 in damage, Madaras said. Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames within five minutes of arrival about 4 p.m.

Union Township and Finleyville fire departments assisted. Southwest Regional police redirected traffic around the area.
