Photo reveals little evidence
The old brick house in this week’s Mystery Photo could be just about anywhere, if it exists at all today.
We have no idea when the picture was taken, but the telephone lines rule out the 19th century.
The road in front of the large house and a smaller frame house on the left is unpaved, and what appears to be an old, rural, cyclinder-style mailbox is mounted on a post in front of the porch.
The only weighty evidence is the sign reading, “Fairbanks Standard Scales.” The company, founded in 1830 in St. Johnsbury, Vt., is still in business today.
If you think you know where this building is – or was – email Park Burroughs, retired executive editor, at pburroughs@observer-reporter.com, or call and leave a message for him along with your telephone number at 724-222-2200, extension 2400.
With a little help from our readers, we should be able to solve this puzzle and publish our findings later.
Mystery Photo update: A number of readers called us about last week’s photo and confirmed that the Washington Park pool was originally rectangular and nine feet deep, where the pool is now just five feet deep.
Charles Sorice of Washington worked at the park from 1973, when he was in high school, to 1979 and remembers that the pool was closed in 1973.
It was rebuilt with a new diving area and opened and dedicated in July 1975, Sorice said.
