A dog is being quarantined after Cumberland Township police said it killed a pet cat while being walked by its owner in Nemacolin last month.
Police said Paul Hewitt was walking his Husky mix on a retractable leash about 10 p.m. July 26 when it attacked and killed the cat on March Avenue.
Hewitt, 52, of Nemacolin, was cited Tuesday for harboring a dangerous dog that killed a domestic animal and failing to confine his animal.
“He’s claiming the cat darted out by the dog and the dog attacked it,” Cumberland Township police Chief Craig Miller said.
The cat’s owner, Jason Humphries, could not be reached for comment.
Miller said the dog is being quarantined while the investigation continues with the assistance of state dog warden. He did not know if the dog might be euthanized.
“It’s too early to tell what will happen,” Miller said.
Online court records show Hewitt pleaded not guilty Tuesday to the two citations filed at District Judge Lee Watson’s office.
