Washington County Commissioner Harlan G. Shober Jr. was elected first vice president of the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania this week when the group convened its summer meeting in Pittsburgh.

Shober, 70, a Chartiers Township resident who is serving his first term as a county commissioner, was chosen last year as the second vice president of the organization. The new terms of CCAP officers begin Jan. 1.

During his tenure as a commissioner, Shober was instrumental in the implementation of a full-time booking center that police departments can use when dropping off prisoners at Washington County Jail. He also serves on the board of directors of United Way of Washington County, Community Action Southwest, Washington Symphony Orchestra and Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.

As commissioner and an officer of CCAP, Shober has advocated keeping Marcellus Shale Act 13 funding in place for local communities and counties.
