PITTSBURGH (AP) – A Pennsylvania man who was drunk when he crashed into a teen motorist, killing her, got a longer-than-expected prison sentence because of a previous drunken driving conviction.

Thirty-year-old Jared Schillinger, of Cheswick, faced a mandatory minimum three- to six-year sentence for homicide by vehicle while driving drunk when he smashed into 18-year-old Rikki Fleming’s car during a snowstorm on Route 28 on Feb. 16, 2013.

Schillinger was speeding when he rear-ended the Millvale woman’s car, ejecting her and killing her instantly. Schillinger’s blood-alcohol level was nearly three times over the legal limit for driving.

Allegheny County Judge Thomas Flaherty sentenced Schillinger Thursday to four to eight years in prison because of his 2011 DUI.

Schillinger apologized and said he hopes to eventually honor Fleming’s memory.
