MIDLAND (AP) – The board of the Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School failed to approve cutting more than 40 jobs.

Only four members of the seven-member board showed up for Wednesday night’s meeting, and they voted 3-1 in favor of the cuts — one vote short of the four-member majority needed.

The school announced it was cutting 43 jobs, including 21 teachers, last month. That came after the school’s teachers’ union, the PA Cyber Education Association, negotiated a first-ever four-year contract for the school’s 140 teachers containing raises totaling 21 percent.

A judge ordered the board to vote publicly on the cuts after several workers sued.

The board’s meeting agenda called for seven layoffs and 35 terminations to be approved. It wasn’t clear why a 43rd job wasn’t being eliminated as originally announced.
