Pittsburgh sewer authority to help fund green projects

PITTSBURGH (AP) – The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority will award 17 grants totaling $250,000 for green infrastructure projects across the city.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports the sewer authority announced Wednesday seven matching grants, ranging from $8,000 to $40,000 will support larger-scale projects to manage stormwater. Also awarded were 10 “mini” grants up to $5,000 to help organizations increase awareness of their efforts.
Nonprofit StartUpton will use the money to construct a 2,000-square-foot “green roof” atop Uptown’s Paramount Film Exchange building, which will catch at least 60,000 gallons of stormwater runoff.
Officials say the city’s first green infrastructure grant program will reduce up to 4 million gallons of stormwater flow each year.
Authority sustainability manager James Stitt says the more water kept out of the sewers helps reduce overflow into rivers.
