WAYNESBURG – Central Greene Scholarship Trust is now pushing to expand its scholarship opportunities for students across the county.
The organization addressed Central Greene School Board Tuesday with a list of future events in which Waynesburg students can participate.
Mike Camilli, a member of the organization, shared with the board some big changes coming to the trust, including offering scholarships to students outside Central Greene.
“We are currently in the process of becoming 501(c)(3) tax exempt,” Camilli said, “and we are looking to expand.”
Within the last two years, CGST has given out about $7,000 to students and charities in the Waynesburg area.
“There have been a number of scholarships that have been awarded to our students through that trust,” Central Greene Superintendent Brian Uplinger said. “They have been phenomenal.”
By expanding to other districts, the organization hopes other students in Greene County will get involved with CGST’s largest event, a trivia contest, and will be able to benefit from the scholarships offered.
“We came to the meeting to thank them for their participation and for letting us use their facilities,” Camilli said. “And also to ask for their further support with our big plans this year.”
CGST uses Central Greene School District’s facilities for their annual trivia contest. Camilli offered the board the opportunity to place a team of students from Waynesburg in the contest for this upcoming year scheduled for Oct. 10.
It will be the third contest the trust has organized. Winners receive money that they give to a specific charity or organization in Greene County.
“It is certainly a worthwhile event for the community to jump into and take part in,” Uplinger said. “Moving forward, we will still support them 100 percent; that’s the number one thing to make sure students in Greene County have this opportunity.”
