NORWOOD (AP) – Authorities say a Philadelphia-area police officer is in good condition after being shot while answering an early morning call about a man believed to be suicidal.

Police in Delaware County said Officer Mark Hanley was hit in the chest and leg when the man fired through the door of a unit at a Norwood Borough apartment building.

Chief Mark DelVecchio told the Delaware County Daily Times that “The officer was saved by his bulletproof vest.”

DelVecchio said officers were sent to the Mohawk Manor Apartments just before 1 a.m. Sunday after a report of a suicidal man with a gun.

Hanley was listed in good condition at Crozer Chester Medical Center. The other man was taken to Taylor Hospital for treatment of a minor injury and psychiatric evaluation.
