Fallowfield man dies after being hit by car
CHARLEROI – Charleroi police asked the state police forensics unit to investigate an accident that caused the death last week of a Fallowfield Township man after he was struck by a car while crossing a borough street.
The Allegheny County medical examiner’s office said Francis J. Nicolaus, 74, was pronounced dead from multiple blunt-force injuries at 10:38 p.m. Friday, nearly two hours after he was struck by a car in Charleroi.
Nicolaus died in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, and his death was ruled an accident, said a spokesman for Medical Examiner Karl E. Williams.
Charleroi Regional police Chief Eric Porter said the identity of the driver of the car involved in the accident was being withheld during the investigation. The car has been impounded by state police, he said.
Nicolaus was crossing Fallowfield Avenue near Sixth Street when he was struck by the southbound car about 8:24 p.m.
He was working as a florist at the time of his death and was retired from Matthews Bronze Division in Pittsburgh, according to his obituary.
