State police enforce steer clear law on I-79
Four drivers were cited for violations of the steer clear law during a “move over initiative” conducted Sunday by state police on Interstate 79 in Greene County.
The initiative was held to enforce the law requiring motorists to move over a lane at the scene of an emergency, police stop or a tow truck attending an abandoned vehicle.
Drivers who can’t move over because of traffic or other conditions must reduce speed.
The law applies any time an emergency vehicle has its lights flashing or road crews or emergency personnel have lit flares, posted signs or tried to warn motorists. Failure to move over or slow down can result in a summary offense that carries a fine of $250.
In addition to issuing the four steer clear citations, state police issued six citations for speeding, two for other violations and three warnings.
