STATE COLLEGE (AP) – Bomb experts from Penn State and the state police have detonated a suspicious package found on the school’s main campus, in a field used mostly for football game parking.

Maintenance crews spotted the package near a fence along Medlar Field before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Police at the scene says the device looked enough like a pipe bomb that crews used caution in dealing with it. The device or package was blown apart shortly after 5 p.m.

Nobody was hurt and officials haven’t publicly said what they believe was in the package or device.

A road near the field was closed for about three hours and police kept the public and media a safe distance away.

The object wasn’t found near any buildings or walkways frequented by students or staff.
