An Allegheny County man was arrested Saturday morning when Washington police said they found suspected heroin and cocaine after searching the house where he had been staying.

Maurice E. Scott, 36, of Homestead, was taken into custody after police were called just after 9 a.m. for a report of a domestic dispute at a home at 165 May Ave.

Police were called to the home after a 911 dispatcher got a call and no one was on the line. As police approached the house, they could hear a man and woman yelling. Naadia Dates answered the door and appeared upset, police said. She reportedly told police that no one else was in the home. Police then heard a loud bang coming from the second floor of the residence. They said Dates yelled that a man had a gun and had shot himself. She was removed from the house, and the residence was secured. State police and officers from South Strabane and North Franklin townships arrived to assist and surrounded the house.

Police yelled for Scott to come down. They said he initially ignored their orders but eventually came downstairs holding an infant as a shield between him and police. Scott was taken into custody. Police said Dates gave them permission to search the house after they found cocaine residue and rolled-up dollar bills. Police said they found two brown boxes under a mattress, one containing pills and the other 22 stamp bags of suspected heroin, 24.5 grams of raw heroin, 11.6 grams of cocaine and empty stamp bags. Police said they also found paraphernalia, a cellphone and $1,200. No weapon was found.

Scott also was wanted on a charge of aggravated assault filed last week by Washington police after he allegedly assaulted Dates last month.

In connection with Saturday’s incident, Scott was arraigned before District Judge James Ellis on charges of possession and possession with intent to deliver heroin and cocaine, possession of paraphernalia and endangering the welfare of a child. He was placed in Washington County jail on $25,000 bond. He is scheduled for a Dec. 21 preliminary hearing before District Judge Robert Redlinger.
