Monongahela Incline reopens after electrical issue shutdown
PITTSBURGH (AP) – An incline that gives sightseers a panoramic view of Pittsburgh has reopened after being closed for more than a week due to an electrical problem.
The Monongahela Incline reopened Saturday after a shutdown that began Dec. 11.
The Port Authority of Allegheny County said an issue with the incline’s electrical system caused the doors to malfunction.
The Mon incline had been closed for more than two months in the fall for a $3.5 million project to improve its cars, rails and control system.
The 635-foot incline, which opened in 1870, is the oldest continually operating funicular in the country.
About 1,700 people use it daily during the week in fall and winter, with weekend and special-event ridership at least tripling.
