Wayne Township boy dies in ATV crash
WAYNESBURG – A 12-year-old boy injured Wednesday in an all-terrain vehicle crash near Calico Run Road in Wayne Township died later that night, state police said.
Charles R. Calvert died of injuries suffered in crash that occurred in a wooded area near his home at about 4:45 p.m., state police said.
The boy, a fifth-grade student at Waynesburg Central Elementary School, was flown by medical helicopter to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va., where he was pronounced dead, police said.
Police at the scene said the boy had been riding the ATV in a wooded area when it apparently flipped over on him.
Central Greene Superintendent Brian Uplinger said the district is off next week for the Christmas holiday, but will have special grief counselors available for students and faculty when they return to class Jan. 4.
“We always have those plans in place when something like this occurs,” Uplinger said. “We have already alerted our staff to the tragedy. We’ll be available when we head back into session.”
Uplinger said the boy’s mother, Judy Calvert, works at the elementary school.
Friends of the family have started a Go Fund Me page to help pay for funeral expenses. The crowd-funding website for Charles, which can be found at www.gofundme.com/24g6nscc, had already reached its goal of $12,000 by Thursday morning with more donations flowing in.
State police are continuing to investigate the crash. It was not known when the West Virginia Medical Examiner’s office would conduct an autopsy to determine a cause of death.
Greene County Bureau Chief Mike Jones contributed to this story.
