Report: Layoffs in works at Murray Energy Corp. mines
WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) – Another round of coal layoffs could be in the works at Murray Energy Corp. mines.
The Intelligencer-News Register quotes a union official and a Murray spokesman discussing impending changes and so-called work force adjustments – an industry phrase that typically means job losses.
Murray spokesman Gary Broadbent said the changes are necessary in light of current coal mining market conditions. He declined to discuss specifics.
Ryan Sparks is vice president of United Mine Workers of America Local No. 1638. He said he believes the layoffs will occur at multiple Murray Energy operations across the nation.
Sparks said the union has heard they will be “significant.”
In May, Murray laid off a total of hundreds of miners at its Marshall and Ohio counties mines in West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle.
