Hazardous materials that spilled onto a hillside along Interstate 70 in Donegal Township were cleaned up without incident, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection.
The spill occurred Wednesday when an Ohio man driving a tandem tractor-trailer crossed the West Virginia border and lost control of his truck in the eastbound lane. The tractor-trailer crashed through a guard rail and rolled down a steep hillside.
DEP spokesman John Poister said Line-X, which is used to coat truck beds, was the only substance that leaked. He said the substance formed a gel because of the cold temperatures, which made it easier to remove.
He said a relatively small amount of diesel fuel leaked, but a nearby stream was not impacted. The tractor-trailer was carrying cardboard, sheet metal, barium chloride, amines, potassium phosphate and fertilizer.
Traffic restrictions were in place while crews worked to remove the drums containing hazardous materials. The driver, John Kincaid, 54, of Blanchester, Ohio, was flown to UPMC-Presbyterian hospital to be treated for moderate injuries.
