Two injured in Somerset Township crash
Two people were flown by helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital Saturday night to be treated for injuries suffered in a two-vehicle accident in Somerset Township.
A man and a woman were traveling in a car through the intersection of Route 136 and Brownlee Road around 7:30 p.m. when they collided with a pickup truck. The driver of the truck appeared uninjured, but was transported to a local hospital by ambulance as a precaution.
Names of the individuals were not immediately known. Fallowfield Volunteer Fire Department Chief Anthony Fleming said the man and woman in the car appeared to be in moderate condition. He said it was unclear what caused the accident or if weather was a factor.
The intersection remained closed while state police and firefighters from three departments worked to clear the debris and remove the vehicles from the roadway.
The accident was just one of many reported in Washington County throughout the day. A freezing rain advisory was issued by the National Weather Service until 10 a.m. Saturday, but emergency responders continued to receive a stream of calls throughout the day.
Valerie Petersen, spokesperson for the state Department of Transportation, said department vehicles “incurred some icy and slick areas,” but the roads in Washington and Greene counties were in better shape than roads in Pittsburgh and other northern counties.
LifeFlight helicopters stopped flying Saturday morning because of weather conditions, according to a 911 supervisor.
A tractor-trailer wrecked early Saturday morning on I-70 West near the Eighty-Four exit. The vehicle crashed through a guard rail and slid down an embankment.
Carroll Township police said they responded to a single-vehicle rollover crash on Route 837 between Monongahela and Donora. The driver was uninjured. A second police officer was called in to help respond to multiple minor accidents.
North Strabane Township police also responded to many calls, most of which dealt with disabled vehicles. A two-vehicle accident occurred at 9:25 a.m. on Demar Boulevard when a vehicle slid down an icy hill and crashed into another vehicle that was backing out of a driveway. No injuries were reported.
The National Weather Service predicted showers are likely in the early morning hours today, but the temperature is expected to be slightly warmer with a high of 54 degrees.
