Washington police are investigating an assault and robbery inside a city home Monday afternoon.

Police said a man wearing a black bandana across his face and red hooded sweatshirt walked into the East Katherine Avenue home through the back door shortly after 4 p.m. and confronted the resident near the kitchen.

The man appeared to be holding a gun, although the woman told police she could not see a weapon because he had a red rag wrapped around his hand. The resident said she also saw a woman with the man inside the kitchen during the robbery.

The resident ran upstairs and into a back bedroom, police said, but the male intruder punched her in the face three times as she tried to close the door.

The intruder then stole a black purse hanging on a door that contained $300, along with a $180 in various gift cards, police said.

Investigators found a black knit hat and a green utility bag apparently used by the intruders.

The resident suffered a cut to her forehead, although police did not say if she was treated for the injuries.

She described the intruder who assaulted her as a black man about six feet tall and weighing 200 pounds.
