CORAOPOLIS (AP) – A suburban Pittsburgh police chief was suspended after being charged in connection with an August crash that seriously injured a woman.

Coraopolis police Chief Alan DeRusso was released on his own recognizance Wednesday after his arraignment on charges including felony aggravated assault by motor vehicle.

Coraopolis Borough Council voted unanimously Wednesday night to place DeRusso on administrative leave. The 56-year-old chief has been out on workers’ compensation since the crash. He wears a walking boot.

Police said they found no evidence DeRusso was answering an emergency call in his unmarked car when he allegedly ran a red light in Moon Township at 80 mph and hit an SUV driven by 36-year-old Kristy Grazier.

DeRusso’s attorney contends he was performing his duties as police chief.
