Monday evening’s rush hour turned dangerous after a cold front caused wet roads to freeze.
State police responded to more than dozen accidents, the majority on Interstate 79 after roads began to freeze around 5 p.m. Shortly after 6 p.m., a multi-vehicle accident slowed the northbound lane on I-79 near the Southpointe exit. No major injuries were reported.
Local fire and police departments responded to more than 50 calls throughout the county. According to a 911 supervisor, more than 20 accidents were reported in Hanover Township by 8 p.m. The icy conditions prompted road closures and scanner reports indicated more than a dozen vehicles were abandoned near Washington.
The National Weather Service reported that cool, dry air moved into the area in the early evening resulting in the travel problems. There were no reports of freezing rain.
Washington County was under a winter weather advisory for snow until 10 p.m. Monday.
The weather is expected to be clear today with high of 25 degrees. Additional precipitation is expected throughout the week, with a rain and snow mixture expected to hit the area Thursday into Friday.
