CARMICHAELS – A 2-year-old girl was struck by an arrow while inside a Cumberland Township home playing with two juvenile boys.
The girl, whose identity was not released, was struck by the arrow in the head and neck area, causing heavy bleeding and a deep gouge that required treatment, Cumberland Township police Chief Craig Miller said.
Police said a 6-year-old boy shot the arrow on May 24 while the children were playing inside the residence at 30 Route 88 Mobile Home Park. The girl was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va., for treatment and has since been released, Miller said.
“I haven’t seen anything like that before,” Miller said of the incident.
On Tuesday, police charged Randy Dailey, 26, with child endangerment after officers said he was supposed to be watching the children and did not immediately contact authorities after the incident. Police they also found several dangerous items, including a hatchet, which the children could reach inside the house.
“He was the primary caregiver at the time supervising the children,” Miller said. “There were some other items laying around that were potential hazards.”
Miller said Dailey and the children are related, although he did not elaborate.
Police said Dailey told them that he ordered the boy not to play with the bow and arrow in the house. However, the boy apparently took the weapon into a back bedroom where he was shooting at cardboard box targets and accidentally struck the girl.
A woman living at the residence came home and contacted emergency responders while driving the girl to Waynesburg for treatment. Medics and police rendered aid in a parking lot near Greene County Airport, and the girl eventually was transported to Morgantown for treatment.
The child endangerment charge against Dailey is filed through District Judge Lee Watson’s office. A preliminary hearing date has not been set.
