Road paving begins in Carmichaels area
CARMICHAELS – Construction crews have been rolling through Carmichaels over the past week as they mill and repave state roads through the borough and around the round-about.
The Golden Eagle Construction crews removed old pavement along George Street from Baileys Crossing to the other side of the borough as part of the state Department of Transportation’s overall Route 21 reconstruction project.
Workers laid down the initial “leveling” layer of pavement Wednesday and Thursday with the hope of having that phase completed before the Fourth of July holiday weekend, PennDOT spokesman Jay Ofsanik said.
The final layer of payment will put down next week with crews expected to complete the work by July 10, Ofsanik said.
Crews are performing similar work on a section of Route 21 west of Carmichaels that stretches from Khedive to Baileys Crossing. Motorists can expect intermittent delays until that work is completed.
“That’s lumped into the overall surface improvement projects in Greene County,” Ofsanik said. “They’ve been doing a lot of work on Route 21, as I’m sure you’ve seen, and they’ll continue doing that.”
Meanwhile, work on the new Masontown Bridge continues on schedule, Ofsanik said.
He said motorists won’t experience traffic pattern changes in the near future while crews continue to work on the eastbound side of the bridge and pour concrete on those lanes. Crews are also working on the approach to the bridge that crosses the Monongahela River, Ofsanik said.
The completion date for the new $49.6 million replacement bridge is scheduled for Dec. 1. The previous steel bridge that stood for 88 years was demolished in September 2013 to make way for the new bridge.
