A Bulger man was arrested Friday by McDonald police for allegedly pointing a gun at an escort driver for Range Resources during an apparent road rage incident earlier in the week in Robinson Township.
Steven Mark Shaffer, 51, of 710 Shaffer Road, was arraigned before District Judge Jay Weller on five counts each of harassment and disorderly conduct, four counts of terroristic threats, and one count each of simple assault and reckless endangerment.
Police were called about 4:40 p.m. Tuesday by a security specialist for the company about a gun being pointed at one the company’s drivers. John Kelvington told police he was escorting a truck on Route 22 when a red truck sped past and cut in between his vehicle and the truck he was escorting. Kelvington told police when he turned onto Robinson Highway, he tried to get around the truck so he could get behind the truck he was escorting. The driver of the pickup allegedly kept slamming on the brakes and yelling.
Kelvington told police the driver followed them to Beech Hollow Road and allegedly pointed a gun at him. The motorist reportedly made a motion like he was going to shoot Kelvington. He said he was able to get the license number of the pickup truck, which was registered to Shaffer. A second escort driver also reportedly observed Shaffer’s actions, telling police that she saw Shaffer point what she thought was a pistol at Kelvington.
About two-and-half hours later, police were dispatched to 266 Midway-Candor Road, Robinson, for a report of a motorist who made threats and threatening gestures towards drivers employed by Magna Service Agency, including Kelvington. That motorist was identified as the person involved in the road range incident.
One of those drivers, William Heuha, told police Shaffer reportedly yelled profanities at them and threatened to kill them. Police went to Shaffer’s home. He reportedly told police he was cut off by the escort driver when he passed Kelvington, causing him to slam on his brakes. Shaffer also told police he almost hit one of the escorts when that driver ran a stop sign, causing him to swerve off the road. Shaffer admitted to yelling profanity and pointing his finger at the drivers. Police asked Shaffer if he carries a gun and he said he sometimes carries a .380-caliber semiautomatic handgun.
Shaffer was released on his own recognizance. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing July 23 at the office of Senior District Judge Jay Dutton.
