Now it’s the Democrats turn to choose a candidate.
The Allegheny County Democratic Committee will hold a special election from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 1 at the Mt. Lebanon Municipal Building on Washington Road to select the Democratic nominee for the 37th Distict state Senate race, according to the committee. The position became available June 21 when former senator Matt Smith resigned to become president of the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce.
“It seems like we have a special election every summer,” said Megan Winters, executive director of the Allegheny County Democratic Committee.
The district includes portions of Upper St. Clair, Mt. Lebanon, Bridgeville, South Fayette and Peters Township.
The Republicans July 11 chose former District Judge Guy Reschenthaler as the party’s candidate.
Eligible voting members for the Aug. 1 election include all chairmen, vice chairmen, secretaries, treasurers, elected or appointed committee members and state committee members residing in the 37th Distict, according to the committee.
Candidates wishing to seek the Democratic nomination should file a letter of intent with the committee by 5 p.m. Friday. Heather Arnet of Mt. Lebanon, who is chief executive officer of the Women and Girls Foundation, announced her candidacy Tuesday. Before moving to Mt. Lebanon, Arnet was a member of the Pittsburgh School Board.
