MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) – A drive to raise $1 billion for West Virginia University is nearing its goal.

The West Virginia University Foundation reported Friday the campaign raised $898 million as of June 30th. That is nearly 90 percent of the ultimate target of the fund drive, called “A State of Minds: The Campaign for West Virginia’s University.”

The campaign that runs through December 2017 has received giving from 76,227 donors. That includes nearly 33,000 alumni and nearly 5,500 corporations.

The foundation said the campaign is already having an impact. It said the giving created 632 new endowed student scholarships, 24 endowed faculty chairs and funding to support research at WVU.
