Washington police and firefighters are on the scene of a crash at Jefferson Avenue and West Beau Street in Washington.

A South Strabane Township man was killed in a two-vehicle collision in the city Friday afternoon.

James R. Stewart, 68, of Sara Drive, was traveling east on West Beau Street at 4:25 p.m. when his sport-utility vehicle was T-boned by a truck traveling north on Jefferson Avenue, according to Washington County Coroner S. Timothy Warco.

Stewart was transported by ambulance to Washington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:49 p.m. He was not wearing a seat belt, Warco said.

The woman who was driving the truck was not injured, police said.

A state police forensics unit arrived at the accident scene shortly after the crash to reconstruct the crash.

A local resident, David Baker, was driving in the parking lot of the Shop ‘n Save when he heard the collision.

“I heard squealing tires and then a big boom,” said Baker. “I got out of my car to go down and help, and the woman was out of the car, she was hysterical, and he wasn’t moving. Other people were arriving to help by the time I got out of my car, so I stayed back.”

The crash remains under investigation.
