Elizabeth Township teenager drowns in Youghiogheny River

An Elizabeth Township teenager drowned while swimming in the Youghiogheny River Saturday afternoon.

Dallas A. Kennedy, 18, of Fourth Avenue, Elizabeth, was swimming with friends off of Smithton Beach Road, Belle Vernon, when he went under the water, according to a news release from Washington County Coroner Tim Warco.

Kennedy was submerged for 20 minutes and pulled to the river bank by friends when he resurfaced.

He was transported to Monongahela Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by Warco.

Assisting at the scene were Rostraver Township EMS and Rostraver Township and Smithton fire and rescue teams. Rostraver Township police are investigating the incident.
