WAYNESBURG – It didn’t rain this year for the 37th annual Rain Day Race held Saturday in Waynesburg, but then again, it didn’t have to rain to be a success.

This year, 224 runners and walkers participated in the 5K run and walk and the one-mile kids’ fun run, an event hosted by Greene County Habitat for Humanity.

“It was another great year for the race,” said Dawn Wood, a member of the race committee. “It was a fun event and, as always, everyone had a good time.”

Runners and walkers who gathered on Porter Street, near High Street, were greeted by clear skies. The course followed Porter Street out and then back.

Clara Santucci of Dilliner, a marathon runner who won the Pittsburgh Marathon two consecutive years and is now preparing for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team trials, was the special guest and started the race.

The top three female runners overall in the 5K race were Kristen McMichael, 18, of Eighty Four, 19:55; Sarah Lucas, 16, of Charleroi, 21:41; and Lindsee Zimmer, 17, of Waynesburg, 22:17.

The top three male runners overall in the 5K race were Ben Bumgarner, 16, of Waynesburg, 16:36; Matthew Girod, 32, of Uniontown, 19:05; and Wyatt Harvey, 16, of Waynesburg, 19:10.

The top three female walkers overall were Ashley Faddis, 19, of Waynesburg, 36:19; Michele Groce, 62, of Uniontown, 38:59; and Linda Keller, 62, of Waynesburg, 40:21.

The top three male walkers overall were Gerard Bertrand, 66, of Venetia, 31:43; John Garber, 53, of Waynesburg, 37:24; and Barrie Baker, 68, of Washington, 41:54.

The finishers in the one-mile kids’ fun run with the best times were Coy Rush, 12, of Waynesburg, 6:24; Aydan Adamson, 9, of Carmichaels, 7:10; and Ambrose Adamson, 9, of Carmichaels, 7:47.

This year’s sponsors were The Williams Foundation, Basic Energy Services, Somerset Regional Water Resources LLC, Rice Energy, Community Bank, Baily Insurance Agency Inc., Greene County Memorial Hospital Foundation, Rumbaugh Back In Action Chiropractic, Waynesburg University, First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Greene County, PNC Bank, Lou Dayich, Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home, Greene Podiatry Associates Inc. and Southwest Women’s Healthcare.
