Canonsburg police responded to the scene of a near-drowning at a home on Linda Court Thursday afternoon.

Police and emergency crews were called at about 3:30 p.m. when a 2-year-old boy was found unresponsive in an above-ground pool in the backyard of the home.

The boy was pulled from the pool by his mother, and an ambulance crew attempted to revive him. He was taken to Canonsburg Hospital.

According to Alexander Coghill, Canonsburg police chief, the boy was playing in the backyard and police do not yet know how he got into the pool.

Police did not release the name of the boy’s mother, but Coghill said the family moved into the home within the past two weeks. County records show the home was recently purchased by Paul Gillum and Laura Rosenberger.

“It’s just a tragic accident,” said Coghill.

Kathy Cooper, who lives next door, said the mother was frantic, drenched and fully clothed when she saw her. Cooper said she was preparing to take her grandchild to an area pool when she saw an ambulance pull next door. She said the family recently moved into the home.

“Some of the neighbors came over and prayed while (the ambulance crew) worked on the little guy,” Cooper said. “We just prayed for a miracle.”

State police were called to assist in the investigation.
