CARMICHAELS – Cumberland Township supervisors agreed Monday to submit an application for federal funding to purchase up to 10 new bulletproof vests for the police department.

The supervisors decided to apply through the federal grant program, Bulletproof Vest Partnership, which provides money to communities to purchase bulletproof vests for their police departments.

Bulletproof vests are recommended to be replaced every five years.

The township plans to purchase up to 10 vests at an estimated total cost of $6,000. The grant would cover half of that cost.

The township police department has four full-time officers and six part-time patrolmen.
