CARMICHAELS – Cumberland Township supervisors Monday afternoon approved a request by a landowner to include property in an agricultural security area.

The supervisors approved the request for an agricultural security area submitted by Celesta Hegedis, whose farm is on Route 21. Hegedis asked that 102 acres be included in the area.

The designation helps farmers protect their land from development and ensure its continued use for agricultural purposes.

It gives farmers special consideration in regard to “nuisance” challenges, which could come into play if, for example, homes were built nearby and the new home owners complained about noise associated with normal farm operations and sought ordinances to restrict it.

The designation also makes it more difficult for someone to use eminent domain to condemn the property.

In other news, the supervisors voted to appoint Duane Rush and Jerry McCombs to the township planning commission. They also agreed to hire Alex J. Hoy for summer help at $10 an hour, with no benefits.

At their last meeting, the supervisors tabled action on awarding a contract to repave streets in the township’s section of Rices Landing.

The supervisors continued the May meeting until May 18, at which time they awarded the contract to Morgan Excavating, which presented the low bid of $84,360.

The project will involve repaving several streets in the township near where it borders Rices Landing Borough, including Sidney Avenue and Young, Walters, Walton, Frick and Breeze streets.
